Gary Edwin Winfree entered his heavenly home on August 6, 2021, in San Marcos, Texas. He was born on September 17, 1950, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Otis Winfree II and Mozelle Black Winfree.

Gary grew up in Tenaha where he graduated from high school and spent his early childhood years. After graduation, he attended Stephen F. Austin State University where he was a member of the Delta Sig Fraternity and eventually attained a Masters Degree is Counseling. For many years, he served as a counselor at Texas Rehab Services, counseling those in need and helping many lives throughout his career. Gary was an avid reader and collected comic books for many, many years, building an enormous collection. He enjoyed movies of all kinds and listened to classic 70’s and 80’s music. Gary never met a stranger – he could talk to anyone about anything for hours on end, and never get bored.

Gary met his beautiful wife, Teri, when they were just 14 years old at church camp. Though Gary had quite the crush on Teri, a relationship was not born until later in their lives, when one day things aligned just right and they were married in 1991. For 30 wonderful years, Gary and Teri took on the world as a team, helping raising each other’s children together, and always showing love to either parents step-child. Gary adored his daughter, Jenny; showing the utmost devotion and fatherly love one could. Family was incredibly important to Gary – his children (blood and step) were showered with love and tenderness. You’d best bet his grandchildren won’t go a day in their lives with any doubt that he loved them!

Gary is survived by his wife, Teri Winfree; daughter, Jennifer Elizabeth Winfree; step-daughter, Tracy Board and husband, Michael; daughter-in-law, Danielle Lyles; brother, Jimmy Hamilton Winfree; and grandchildren, Olivia Board, Archer Ellis Lyles, and Kyle Austin Haan.

Gary is preceded in death by his father, Otis Winfree II; mother, Mozelle Black Winfree; brother, Otis Kenton Winfree III; and step-son, Richard Lyles.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sunshine Cottage School for Deaf Children in San Antonio, Texas, as well as Great Hearts Live Oak Charter School in San Antonio, Texas.
